Gilbert Heathcote appointed Lieutenant, 10 December 1799. Appointed Commander 29 April 1802. Appointed Captain 5 September 1806. On 25th December 1803, while in command of the sloop, HMS Suffisante, his ship was lost on Spike Island, off Cork during a heavy gale. Heathcote was reprimanded but not punished.
